Aaron Burnett is a classroom teacher with a wealth of experience in early years education. He works at an elementary school in Winnipeg, Manitoba. When not educating children, he is lead singer and guitarist with the Keystone Bluegrass Quartet, one of the top bluegrass bands in western Canada. Fronting this band, Aaron has a variety of experiences from playing the main stage at the prestigious Winnipeg Folk Festival, to entertaining an audience of nearly 5000 at the 2001 Blueberry Bluegrass Festival near Edmonton. Keystone has played many other festivals in Manitoba, Alberta, northwestern Ontario and the northern U.S.A. The band has been featured with live performances on CBC radio Manitoba (Art's Encounters) and the national program (This Morning). Throughout his teaching career, Aaron has always used his acoustic guitar and his love of music to enrich the learning of the students in his care. Several years ago he was inspired to write songs for children after having songwriter, Bob King do a workshop with his class. Taking advantage of his teaching experience, Aaron used the high interest topic of animals native to Canada as his theme. With a deep love for outdoor activities and wildlife, this seemed a natural place to begin. Having a 'captive' audience to try the songs on proved to be very advantageous as well as educational. In March of 2001, Aaron began to record the songs he had written opting for traditional bluegrass instrumentation and vocal harmony. He wanted to expose the kids to the rhythmic melodies of bluegrass music as experience had taught him that kids truly enjoyed this genre of music once they heard it. The self produced recording project was completed in June 2001. The result ...13 wonderful songs and the CD entitled, 'Call of the Wild'. Aaron's love of the Canadian wilds and his ability to communicate knowledge to children in an entertaining way are uniquely combined in these memorable songs about Canadian animals. On February 11, 2002 'Call of the Wild' was nominated for a Juno as Best Children's Recording in Canada. Aaron was honoured to attend the Junos in St, John's, Newfoundland in april. Since returning from the Junos Aaron has been busy playing at elementary schools, Fort Whyte Nature Centre, and the Winnipeg International Children's Festival. He will be playing a Canada Day celebration at Riding Mountain National Park and the Winnipeg Folk Festival in July.
