“Urban funk” is a genre that could aptly define the sound of Wang the Merciless. Wang combines the best elements of the best genres: the deep, laid back feel and lyrical virtuosity of hip hop (reminiscent of Notorious B.I.G, Outkast, and Devin the Dude), the catchy, hip-thrusting grooves of funk (the Meters, Sly and the Family Stone, P-Funk), the sweet, baby-making atmosphere of soul/RnB (Marvin Gaye, the Isley Brothers), and the ballsy attitude and soaring musical heights of rock (Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Led Zeppelin). Bob Marley, and reggae in general, also hold a significant place in the band’s heart. Cutting away all excesses of each genre, Wang seamlessly sews together these influences to provide a fresh new sound that is unheard of by any other musical act. Their sound is coupled with arguably the most energetic live show found in the city: the sweaty, raw, down-and-dirty seductiveness that defines Wang the Merciless.
