I feel for what Ultimate Power Duo had to deal with ... but for the record, it goes both ways.
Every time I have tried to get my band into Canada from the U.S. I have had to quote to the universally under-informed border agents the specific section and paragraph number of the Immigration Canada law explaining exactly why the signed letter I have on my person from the festival we are coming into the country to play for no compensation exempts us from having to purchase separate work permits for everyone in the band and crew. Every time the band gets accepted into NXNE, I just make sure to schedule our flight into Toronto so that the time we are guaranteed to waste sitting around while the border agents figure all this out for themselves yet again is built into our schedule.
I nervously await the day the border agent either doesn't understand or just decides to ignore the law on this, and doesn't let us in. I'm sure it's coming.
