HEART DOESN'T HEART REPUBLICANS

The Republican National Convention will leave several lasting memories in the hearts and minds of Americans and anyone else able to tune into inspirational biographical videos and endless speeches. Yes, I will forever remember where I was when Alaskan Governer and VP hopeful Sarah "Barracuda" Palin joked that the difference between hockey moms and pitbulls was "lipstick."

I will also remember the revulsion I felt last night when I heard Heart's timeless song, "Barracuda," playing while Palin was on the RNC stage. Her nickname is "Barracuda." From when she played basketball. Whatever.

The Republican organizers could've piped in songs about Alaska, songs by Pitbull, or even songs written by people who wear glasses. But they chose the obvious.

Ann and Nancy Wilson, who are the heart of Heart, didn't much appreciate it, though. Ann Wilson released a statement saying that the band "did not and would not" giver permission for the Republicans to use their '70s classic. Read more about the Wilson sisters' response.

They're not the only ones: John Mellencamp and Jackson Browne have both asked the McCain campaign to stop using their songs.

Meanwhile, Democratic hopeful Barack Obama is trying to steal McCain's beloved Brooks & Dunn.

Canadians can only wait and see what musicians might complain about their songs being used in our own upcoming election. Then again, music may not be necessary anymore...

I hope if Harper, Dion or Layton use a song against the will of an artist (without getting authorization) that songwriters organizations such as yourselves will step to the plate and sue them for copyright infringement. Especially if it's Harper.

I didn't know that this was such an anti Conservative/Republican forum. Perhaps look into who is funding this project. Then look around at productivity and wonder no more about coming cuts!

I do not support my taxes being spent on wages for employees to blog about their personal political opinions.

Vander, so what you're saying is that you do approve of music being appropriated for political use against the will of the artists? Just checking if I understood you right, since that is actually the point of the article.

Gravatar Vander on Friday, September 5, 2008
Not at all what I'm saying.
Nice diverson though.

For the record, Vander, I am neither employed by Maria or the federal government. I am entitled to my political beliefs and I am entitled to express them in a public forum. As are you.

I wonder if Vander would be as indignant if he or she agreed with the political belief expressed.

But as usual with the right-wing smoke screen, being presented with the actual facts - in this case that artists such as Heart, Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, and Van Halen express objections to their music being used to promote right-wing political ideals and have to go to court to stop it - elicits an attack rather than contemplation. I thought the right was all about the "rule of law."

I wonder if JOIK is B Ehinger? lol.

Haha... nice. Nope.

It's so funny that right wingers are generally out numbered 2 to 1 in these forums, but somehow they still stay in power politically.

I guess Vander (and Marty Chase... maybe?) support the 44 million cuts to the arts. And support the lies of the Harper admin that they are just trying to redistribute the arts funding more effectively. Yeah... like redistributing it to the Vancouver Olympics. I guess that's the price of an aggressive offensive in Afghanistan. No money for sports and arts... so we'll just take from one and give to the other. The rest of the money can go into killing soldiers and "the brownies" - moderator, do your thing.

The dead children were worth it.

Didn't the Liberal PM at the time cast us into Afghanistan to begin with here folks?
Let's be educated about this discussion if we're going to have it!

Gravatar B. Ehinger on Friday, September 19, 2008
We were sent in as peace keepers. It was Harpers govt that changed the mission to an offensive.

But that's a little off topic, isn't it. My fault.

Gravatar Reeve on Wednesday, September 24, 2008
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced on October 7, 2001 that Canada would contribute forces to the international force being formed to conduct a campaign against terrorism.

This was not a "peace keeping" mission.

Thank you.
