About

Heartworn Highways returns for its 5th show in the series. After taking the summer off, we're coming out guns blazing with some of the same old fun, but also, something new!

For this particular event on September 18, we have our first ALL FEMALE workshop! Jess Rae Ayre (of Sweet Alibi), Ingrid Gatin, Vanessa Kuzina (of Oh My Darling) and Cassidy Mann will all be on stage sharing their favourite outlaw country classics.

For those of you who don't know about the event series, Heartworn Highways is an event series that puts on shows every couple months here at The Park Theatre. Each night features four local artists covering some outlaw country classics. Backed by a full house band, local favourites, The Buffalo Band.

Some artists to look forward to include: Townes Van Zandt, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams Jr, Kris Kristofferson Steve Earl, Waylon Jennings, and many more.

This month, we are so happy to have four very talented women leading the event. As always The Buffalo Band will be backing everyone up and Kieran West will be hosting the event. It will be a party, as usual.

Jess Rae Ayre //

You probably know Jess best from her position in Winnipeg's Sweet Alibi. Drawing influence from a vast array of musical references, Sweet Alibi apply a quirky pop sensibility to an eclectic set. Songs range in mood from hauntingly provocative ballads to left of centre takes on everything from Country and Soul to Old Time Jazz. Backing their vocals with electric guitars, banjos, hand percussion, ukuleles, upright bass, and whatever else they can get their hands on, Sweet Alibi compliment a diverse set with an equally eclectic instrumentation.

Ingrid Gatin//

Ingrid Gatin creates soundscapes and dreamscapes, pulling the listener along into her reveries with her soulful and sultry voice. You can hear strains of 70’s soul in the air, and hints of Balkan bravado, but through it all Ingrid evokes emotion, longing, and romance in every song. Born and raised on the Canadian prairies, dramatic landscapes and endless skies have fed her imagination since she was a child. She credits her innovation to small towns and swings, the wildness of the surrounding nature, and piano lessons in her Aunt’s home at four years old.

Vanessa Kuzina //

Singer- Songwriter Vanessa Kuzina discovered her voice learning the songs of Canadian greats like Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen. Inspired with a deep passion to write and sing she began writing in her teens and released her solo album of all original songs, Peony (2007). Kuzina is a member of country-roots femmes fatales, Oh My Darling. Known as the "cowboy poet" of the group, writing lyrics that tell stories about life on the prairies, and probe at emotions that run deeply through our human experience. Her soaring vocals and tender guitar engage her audience to connect deeply whether on a festival stage or in an intimate performance setting.

Cassidy Mann //

Winnipeg singer-songwriter Cassidy Mann has been writing for as long as she can remember. Her songs are lead by hooky vocal melodies, a strong voice and a tinge of nostalgia. Fresh off the release of her second EP, the WCMA nominated Blue Skies and Bright Eyes, Mann has showcased at JUNOfest 2014 and performed at this year’s Winnipeg Folk Festival. Her music has been featured on CBC and local stations UMFM, Hot103 and NCI FM, with the single “Don’t Give Up On Me” reaching the number one spot on Canada’s National Aboriginal Music Countdown. An artist on this rise, Mann is surely one to keep an eye on.

Don't miss the fourth event in what is becoming a great series. With each passing event this has turned into more of a party. Definitely not an event to be missed.
