Jazz Winnipeg is pleased to announce the return of the popular Nu Sounds Series. Now in its ninth season, the series was established to showcase Manitoba musicians and to give them an avenue to explore new ideas. Running from January through May, all Nu Sounds concerts take place at the Park Theatre.
The series kicks off on Sunday, January 18 with a unique concert by the Winnipeg Jazz Collective – a group consisting of ten of Winnipeg’s best jazz musicians. For their performance at this year’s Nu Sounds Series, the collective will feature new, innovative works for ten-piece jazz ensemble written by members of the group, as well as Canadian composers such as Josh Grossman, Daniel Jamieson, Andy Ballantyne and Rob McConnell.
The series continues on Sunday, March 15 when Guitarist Keith Price presents his Live Remix Project. Performing with a jazz trio and two DJs onstage, Keith’s music will be recorded live and sampled by the DJs, who would then add those layers of sound back into the mix, influencing what the musicians play next. The DJs will also use sound clips of speech and sound to add the the atmosphere of the moment.
Guitarist Jocelyn Gould makes her Nu Sounds Series debut as a leader on Sunday, April 12. This year, in an effort to improve their composition skills, Jocelyn and a few of her peers put together a composition group that meets weekly to play everyone’s new compositions. Jocelyn and her quintet will perform the best pieces that have come out of this project at their concert.
Finally, on Sunday, May 17, a unique project examining the parallels between poetry and jazz. Writer Charlene Diehl will perform a new suite of poems, “Songs for my Father,” accompanied by a jazz group – A Flock of Bards – led by bassist Steve Kirby.
