Greek Riots

Greek Riots are an indie-rock quintet hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Led by Jacques Richer’s deep and commanding voice, their music is of an ethos that could be described as a mindful mob mentality: rise together, fall together, and fight together. To be sure, there are definite moments of personal expression in their music that come through in lyrical form as well as in Duncan Murta’s searing guitar solos, Breandan Flynn’s skillful keyboard arpeggios, Seamus Hamilton-Pattisonn’s driving bass runs, and Mack Hatcher’s tightly executed drum fills and solos. Yet the united voice of Greek Riots, at times sweetened by gang vocals and harmonies coming from various band members, often forms a “we” instead of a “me”. There is a constant sense of collectivity in the music, whether several voices come together to express a singular character’s voice, or instrumental parts cleverly accentuate and resonate with the melodic and lyric flow. One never loses sight of the fact that this is a tightly knit five-piece band. Instead of a singer overshadowing four back-up musicians, which is where many indie-rock bands seem to fail. They are spirited and courageous, but never showy or arrogant. With a glance at their debut disc, Greek Riots make it plain to see that their music seeks to conquer monsters and men alike.

Mobina Galore

Punk-alt-pop duo, Mobina Galore, formed in late 2010 by Jenna Priestner (guitar/vocals) and Marcia Hanson (drums/vocals) and are based out of Winnipeg MB. They embarked on their first Canadian tour in 2011 with only a dozen original tunes in hand. The success of the tour lead them to Vancouver to record a self-produced 5-song EP Skeletons in 2012 that showcased more of a garage rock, heavy edge to their sound. The album charted numerous times across Canada on College Radio Stations, reaching #1 in Kingston ON and Kamloops BC. During that year Mobina Galore showcased at NXNE, reached the Top 25 in CBC Radio 3’s Tracks on Tracks contest and headed on their first headlining mini-tour of Western Canada to promote Skeletons.

2013 had some successes for Mobina Galore as well; they were finalist in Manitoba Songfest with their track “Hear Me Out” and again showcased at NXNE coinciding with another Canadian Tour from Vancouver BC to Ottawa ON. Most importantly they began production on their upcoming album Cities Away. In anticipation of their album release, Mobina Galore has spent 2014 on the road, including three tours out West and a month long tour in Ontario and Quebec with showcases at Big Fun Festival (Winnipeg), Juno Fest (Winnipeg), Canadian Music Week (Toronto), Pouzza Fest (Montreal) and Golden Sound Festival (Golden BC).

Moon Tan

Energetic. Funky. Progressive. Vintage. Rock n’ Roll. These are a just few elements that have forged together to create a unique yet very familiar sound, one that is cleverly harnessed by Winnipeg’s newest power trio known as Moon Tan.

Initially drawn together as a cover band, it wasn’t long before the group discovered their natural talent for creating catchy melodies and grooves. The trio –consisting of drummer Nicholas Kula, Guitarist Brady Mitchell and Bassist Adrian Dyer– soon amassed a large catalogue of instrumental material, but this music demanded a voice. After hunting throughout the city in search of a front man, Adrian decided to take the torch and undergo vigorous vocal training. The group hasn’t looked back since.

Very active in Winnipeg’s nightlife scene, Moon Tan never fails to turn heads during their dynamic live performances. What truly makes this sound unique is the technical expertise intertwined in their eclectic and electric sets. With funky, driving bass lines that lift you from your seats, beastly-intricate drum beats that draw you to the dance floor, piercing vocals and soaring-melodic guitar licks cleverly woven into the mix, this power trio packs a punch. “We enjoy dabbling in unconventional time signatures while still maintaining a common sound ground with our audience,” says front man Adrian Dyer. “Whether you’re into dance tunes or math rock, we’ll have a little something to catch your ear.” This is evident on Moon Tan’s track “Medieval Dance”, which lures you in as it transforms from a dance pop number into a psychedelic, jazzy breakdown, and then ties back neatly together at the end.
