About

Coming this January from Royal Canoe frontman Matt Peters and actor/singer-songwriter Tom Keenan, a brand new project under the name of their new duo Heavy Bell. The songs on the album, arranged for a chamber ensemble, will be performed on piano, strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion and choir. Two songs that feature the recorded voice of Elizabeth Smart reading from her novel will also be performed giving Winnipeg audiences a chance to hear her words in her own voice.

This special night will be the launch of this new album as well as kickoff a western tour of this incredible project.

Following the success of their previous collaborations on musically interpreted Shakespearian classics (The Winter’s Tale, Richard II), the two artists are working together again to bring us a musical interpretation of Elizabeth Smart’s classic “By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept”, a novel believed to be the fictionalized account of Smart’s affair with George Baker, a British poet. Originally published in 1945, the book has been referred to as “one of the half-dozen masterpieces of poetic prose in the world”, and if their previous adaptations of classic literature are any testament to their ability to create fascinating portrayals of a character’s innermost struggles, then we’re in for a treat to say the least.

Other artists who are joining in on this unique venture are members of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Begonia, Chic Gamine, Royal Canoe, Slattern and Imaginary Cities.
