Rosalyn Dennett and Allison de Groot, (current members of Canadian roots band Oh My Darling) started playing together as a duo in the fall of 2009. After a long and winding road trip that took them from Winnipeg, to Montreal, to West Virginia and back, the pair began a songwriting spree that drew inspiration from these adventures, combining the indie-pop sounds of the east with old time from the south. With their self appointed genre of oldtime-indie-folk, their music has been described as "wildly original, traditionally informed" (Oliver Swain, Outlaw Social), and pushes the limits of what sounds and textures can be accomplished by the standard fiddle-banjo ensemble. Their songwriting is fresh, and unique, balancing instrumental ingenuity with poetic and thoughtful lyrics. The Holler use their unique voices to explore a gambit of emotions and experiences, from singing softly as the wind rustling a prairie field, to shouts over an Appalachian hootenanny.
