Jenny Berkel has been quietly making waves across the country with her shimmering, dusky folk. Onstage, her ability to hush and draw in a crowd dances across the line between concert and poetry reading. Her debut album, Here on a Wire, has been called "hushed, ethereal, and almost spooky" (Bob Mersereau, CBC), and a "wonderful surprise" (Exclaim!). Produced by Matt Peters (Royal Canoe and The Waking Eyes), this debut is a collection of eleven stark and haunting songs that draw their substance from a blend of personal experience and collective history.
Centering around the lilt of Berkel’s emotive lyrics, Here on a Wire features a brooding and delicate arrangement of cello, upright bass, French horn, slide guitar, organ, and percussion. With Jenny’s deep and smoky voice winding its way through these rich layers, the album stands as an arresting collection of “haunt folk.”
Jenny has been touring extensively since relocating to Winnipeg, and has shared stages with Amelia Curran, Rachel Sermanni, Danny Michel, and many more. In spring of 2013, she participated in her first European tour. This summer, she toured across Western Canada, participating in mutliple folk festivals.
