ANY music fan who traipses around the jazz music-themed nights in this city will surely be familiar with the exceptional South American guitar stylings of Marco Castillo. There is no sophomore slump for this talented player, as his second full-length album, the super listenable Trip To Brazil, finds Castillo easily hitting his stride in the studio.
Castillo's enthusiasm for his music is evident on every track and whether he is playing gut or steel string, electric or acoustic guitars, he shows both taste and assurance in his work. His capable mates (local heavies Scott Senior, Gilles Fournier and George Colligan) are more than the canvas he uses to paint on, they also add strength and meaning to these mostly jolly and upbeat tracks.
The production, engineering and mixing are spot-on and Castillo can easily add these skills to his growing CV. Standouts include Bala Com Bala, O Ronco da Cuica and the Gilbert Gil-esque Valeu.
