After spending the last decade as a music publisher, director of the Songwriters Association of Canada and hosting the television show Songwriters Showcase, Winnipegger Rick Burt has finally gotten around to recording his second album 15 years after his debut, Beyond the Perimeter, was released.

In that time various musical trends have come and gone, but Burt's songwriting possesses a timeless quality, as evidenced on the 11 songs on this concept album about the life and times of Billy, a northern Manitoba resident who moves to Winnipeg.

Old-school country is at the heart of album, but there are touches of contemporary roots (the title track), rockabilly swing (Donna Don't Dance), country blues (Paint it Blue, A Lifetime Ain't Enough Time) and classic rock (She's Not the Lovin' Kind). No matter whether it's a back porch twanger, or a waltz, Burt's sharp sense of melody always shines through, and his skilful band provides just the right flavouring.

It's an impressive return to the recording studio for this veteran.
