Four Nods for Manitoba Artists at 2010 JUNO Awards

Manitoba artists have four chances to bring home hardware at the 2010 JUNO Awards in St. John’s this April. The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced nominees early on March 3 in Toronto, broadcasting live on CTV’s website.

Country rock act Doc Walker has a chance to bring home Country Recording of the Year for the second year in a row, this time for it latest release, Go. The trio picked up the award last year for its previous release, Beautiful Life, and was also named Group of the Year at the 2009 Canadian Country Music Awards in September. Doc Walker is also up for Favourite Country Artist/Group at this year’s Independent Music Awards, which will be held in Toronto on March 13 during Canadian Music Week.

Singer/songwriter Romi Mayes is nominated for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year: Solo for her latest independent release, Achin’ In Yer Bones. Mayes was a double winner at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards in Brandon in October, bringing home Roots Solo Recording of the Year and Songwriter of the Year. This is Mayes’ first Juno nomination.
 
A two-time Juno winner, acclaimed singer/songwriter Steve Bell is nominated for Contemporary Christian/Gospel Album of the Year for his latest release, Devotions, out on Winnipeg-based label Signpost Music.

Another previous Juno winner, Brandon-born violinist James Ehnes is up for Classical Album of the Year: Solo or Chamber Ensemble for his latest effort, James Ehnes plays Paganini 24 Caprices.

Winners will be declared at the JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards on April 17, and the 2010 JUNO Awards broadcast on CTV on April 18 in St. John’s, NL.
