The 11th anniversary of the Gimli Film Festival rises up from the waters of Gimli Beach this week offering another year of feature films, documentaries and shorts from Manitoba, Canada, and the world.

This year, Manitoba Music has teamed up with the festival film buffs to present Music at the Movies, a series of five nightly concerts featuring Manitoba performers showcasing their talent prior to each evening’s Beach Movie.

Kicking off the festivies on July 20 are The Magnificent 7's, playing a set of bluegrass mayhem before the screening of the Academy Award-nominated animation, The Illusionist.

On July 21, audiences can catch a set by acclaimed singer/songwriter JP Hoe, who was recently seen on stage with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra during the Canada Day festivities at The Forks, which preceeds the film Bill Cunningham: New York

Fresh from a Canadian tour, indie pop Gimli locals Mise en Scene will grace the beach on July 22 before the film Barney’s Version.

WCMA-nominated Latin world music act Trio Bembe will get folks dancing in the sand on July 23, followed by Score: A Hockey Musical and a midnight viewing of Canadian independent film, Beauty Day.

Winnipeg folk/rock band Eeper Weeper, who the CBC recently crowned as “Manitoba’s Top High School Band”, will give a special afternoon performance on July 24 at 2:30pm.

Wrapping up the Music at the Movies programming is singer/songwriter  Deborah Romeyn, before the screening of classic underwater horror flick, Jaws, on July 24.

Bands begin at 8:30pm each evening at the Red Dock and are free and open to the public. In addition to the rock n’ rolling of music and film on the beach, the festival offers three indoor film venues, industry workshops and seminars, an awards ceremony, and networking events.
