SPECIAL MARTINI FOR SPECIAL EVENING
It’s not everyday an ‘indie’ artist garners support from a major sponsor. But when a local Southern Comfort rep heard Serena’s music, she knew this was the kind of artist the company could get behind. “Serena has such a unique sound, and such a unique vibe. She really suits the uniqueness of a brand like Southern Comfort,” said Bernice Sharples, Sales Manager Midwest Canada for Charton Hobbs Inc. “We’re so happy to be a part of her exciting event that we’re going to name a drink after her!” The special Going Postel martini will be available at the concert.
PASSION FOR PAINTING
If you walked into Serena’s home, the first thing you’d notice (besides the friendly greeting from her cat Basia!) is a wall lined side-to-side and top-to-bottom with acrylic paintings on canvas. But she’s not an art collector – she’s an artist. The second thing you’d notice is how incredibly creative and talented Serena truly is. Her paintings could be described as a bold blend of surrealism and experimentalism – daring, dynamic and vibrant. Perhaps it’s fitting that her art will be on public exhibit for the first time at her concert, because those same three words – daring, dynamic and vibrant – might also be used to describe her stage performance.
MUSIC VIDEO MADE THE ‘OLD FASHIONED’ WAY
In a modern world of digital imaging and instant production, good ‘old fashioned’ filmmaking is fast becoming a thing of the past. So when Winnipeg filmmaker W. James Meagher approached Serena with an ambitious project, she was as intrigued as she was interested. Meagher’s idea was to make an entire music video by hand – shooting it himself using colour Super 8mm film; hand-processing the film himself in a makeshift bathroom darkroom and kitchen sink; transferring the film himself into high-definition digital footage using an old optical printer interfaced with a digital camera in a process he developed specifically for this video; and finally, editing it himself on his own digital editing system. The result was approximately 100,000 still photos transferred from 1500 feet of raw footage to make one distinctly different music video for the song Not My Wave. “I don't think that a music video can get any more DIY than this, nor can it get any more handmade than this,” explained Meagher, whose production company C'est La Guerre Moving Pictures Inc. plans on using Serena’s video as a unique portfolio piece. “I think it looks quite unlike anything else I’ve seen out there . . . and best of all I think it looks fabulous!” Not My Wave will receive its debut at the concert.
ABOUT SERENA POSTEL
She’s been called “Winnipeg's Firecracker” and the “love child” of Ani DiFranco and Sarah Harmer. She’s relatively new to the music scene, but everyone who witnesses her perform is blown away by the volume of raw talent and unbridled energy. Serena Postel's charismatic voice and captivating songs are complimented by percussive guitar style and razor-sharp wit. She puts on a show to remember, displaying a mosaic of emotion and experience that mesmerizes an audience. Since starting her musical journey, Serena has been selected to showcase at NXNE Music Festival (Toronto), the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, the Brandon Folk Festival, the Trout Forest Festival, embarked on three cross-Canada tours, and garnered airplay on CBC Radio, UMFM, CKUW and KICK-FM and will be showcasing at this years OCFF Conference (Ottawa). She has shared the stage with some of Canada’s finest folk artists including Nathan Rogers, NQ Arbuckle, Coco Love Alcorn, Romi Mayes, Twilight Hotel and Dan Frechette. From Serena's 2006 EP Spare Change, the song Big Bad Wolf, a haunting tale of a child's nightmare, sat at number one on Manitoba’s Music Chart for several weeks. Inspired by the success of Spare Change, and excited by her own musical evolution, Serena is currently recording her first full-length album. Once released, she plans on persistently touring across Canada, the US and Australia, because on the road "you have no choice but to be heading somewhere…"
