Canadian Music Week kicks off with the third annual Canadian Independent Music Awards February 26 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto. Four of the eleven Manitoba artists attending the four-day event have been nominated for awards. Violin virtuoso James Ehnes, internationally-acclaimed childrens entertainer Fred Penner, six-member female vocal group Madrigaia and country band Doc Walker are representing Manitoba at this years awards.

It's great to be recognized for the quality of the work that we do, says Madrigaias Marie-Claude McDonald, whose album Viva Voce is nominated for World Album of the Year. We've been working really hard to get where we are. Getting nominated for something is definitely reassuring - it tells us we're doing something right! We hope that it will attract attention to who we are and what we do.

Its been a good week for Penner, Ehnes and Doc Walker, who have recently received Juno nominations for Childrens Album of the Year, Classical Album of the Year (solo or chamber and large ensemble or soloists(s)), and Country Recording of the Year, respectively. This is Madrigaias first nomination.

Nominees and winners are decided on by committees made-up of individuals from all areas of the Canadian music scene.
