2003 Blizzard Awards Honour Local Film and Music

Posted on

With the Grammys and the Golden Globes over, and the Oscars not yet upon us, awards fans have something to tide them over. The 2003 Blizzard Awards, a bi-annual tradition that began in 1991, happen on March 3, 2003. The Blizzards recognize and celebrate the best in Manitoba's film and television industry, including audio recording and music. Productions nominated for Blizzards include those that premiered between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2002. The three audio awards are up for grabs are Best Overall Sound, Best Music Video and Best Musical Score.

Clint Skibitzky of daCapo Productions feels good about daCapos nomination for Best Music Score for We Have the Power Within Us, an advertising spot for Manitoba Hydro.

The Blizzards have been specifically created for the film and television industry, and it is a wonderful opportunity for the music community to gain some recognition profile with members of this, highly complementary, creative community, says Skibitzky. I would love to see our local music community create more music for locally filmed and produced programming, and the sound/score categories of the Blizzard awards is one way to show all the film producers that we can create great original music for their productions right here in Manitoba (and qualify for the tax credit to boot).

Garfield Williams of hip-hop duo Mood Ruff, which is nominated for Best Music Video for Originate, remarks that hes followed the Blizzards for a few years now. It's nice to be a part of something you are fond of. Williams recognizes the importance of artists being a part of the production of their own videos, having co-produced Originate with Ryan Berzuk and Executive Producer Larry Spittle.

If you consider yourself an artist and have any bit of common sense, you would involve yourself in as many aspects of your video as you can, says Williams, who also has played a supporting role in the Sean Garritys Blizzard nominated Inertia. Whether its the creative side or administration side, there is nothing worse than taking instruction from some bright idea that doesn't involve you, leaving you feeling detached and uncertain with the final outcome of your own video.

The Blizzard Awards are a major fundraiser for the Manitoba Motion Picture Industry Association (MMPIA), the non-profit membership-driven association that represents the interests of Manitoba's motion picture industry, production companies and professionals.
