Bacteria Buffet Records Launches Ska Festival

Posted on

In a season already overflowing with music festivals, Winnipeg will welcome one more in June. This summer marks the launch of the Annual Winnipeg International Ska Festival, presented by Bacteria Buffet Records. The festival features six dynamic shows between June 5 and 18 featuring will acts from New York, Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto, Minneapolis, and, of course, Manitoba.

Bacteria Buffet, which is Western Canada's only ska and reggae record label, is home to The Barrymores, Greg Milka Crowe, and JFK & The Conspirators, all of whom are releasing albums this summer. Also on the roster are The Wedgewoods, The Afterbeat, and R.W.P.O.

"A lot of other cities in Canada and the U.S. do similar festivals but Bacteria Buffet Records is trying to out-do the others," says label spokesman and The Afterbeat frontman Michael Reis. "We are definitely focusing more on celebrating ska through diversity."

Reis notes that while this is a festival of ska music, there are other genres represented to compliment the sound, such as Winnipeg rockabilly duo The Farrell Bros., local indie rockers Inward Eye, and Minneapolis' The Gilbots.

"We are putting bills together here that feature non-ska acts performing, but they definitely fit into the genre or are influenced by Ska music," explains Reis.

The Barrymores will kick of the festival on June 5 with the release of their CD All Nighters, joined by The Farrell Bros. and The Crackdown.
