Musicians Help with Tsunami Relief

Posted on

Artistic communities across Canada are gathering together to help raise money for the recovery and rebuilding efforts in south Asia in the wake of last month's devastating tsunami. Manitoba artists are donating their time for the cause in a special tsunami relief concert on January 8 at the West End Cultural Centre.

Hosted by CBC Radio personalities Al Rae and Joe Fingerote, the event will feature a variety of popular local artists, including Nettwerk recording act Nathan, singer/songwriter Christine Fellows, Grammy nominated Christian rapper Fresh I.E., Juno winner Steve Bell, Chinese flutist Xiao Nan Wang, Jillian Horton, and DJ Hunnicutt. Members of The Skydiggers will also be on hand as part of the effort. CBC listeners across Canada will be able to hear the relief concert on Definitely Not The Opera at 3:05pm while Shaken Not Stirred will air an extra hour of programming at 5:05pm.

CBC Radio will broadcast special programming on January 5 in order to raise awareness of the disaster that has already claimed over 180,000 lives. Many artists, including a strong contingent of Manitoba musicians, will be featured on air, encouraging the Canadian public to donate to the relief effort.

All proceeds from the relief concert will go to Unicef and the Mennonite Central Committee. Representatives from several aid agencies will be at the event on January 8 to collect donations for the relief effort in south Asia.

Doors are at 12:30pm and showtime is at 1pm on Saturday, January 8. Tickers are available at CBC, Music Trader, and the WECC for $15. For more information, please visit www.wecc.ca.
