FACTOR Board Changes

The Annual General Meeting of FACTOR – The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings held on Friday June 23rd, saw the departure of two long-standing, dedicated members of the Board. Specifically, Brian Chater and Sylvia Tyson retired and were replaced by Alvin Jahns of Stony Plain Recordings and Canadian recording artist Terry Kelly.

FACTOR’s current bylaws limit the appointment of a Director to a maximum of three, two-year terms. With the adoption of this policy a number of years ago, there has been a phase-in period to ensure the foundation did not have a complete change over all at once.

Sylvia Tyson, who filled the seat of the AF of M, indicated that she enjoyed her work on the Board and expressed her confidence that “Terry Kelly is a very capable replacement.”

Terry Kelly is a Member of the Order of Canada, a recipient of a King Clancy Award and has Honorary Doctorates from the University of King’s College and Saint Mary’s University. He was also a double silver medalist at the 1979 Canadian Track Championships. Terry also serves on the Board of the CNIB and the Nova Scotia Arts Council.

Brian Chater, who filled one of the two CIRPA seats on the Board, has been replaced by Alvin Jahns. Mr. Chater was one of the founding Directors of FACTOR and while he stepped down for a period of time, he returned in 1988 and remained an active member of the organization both at the Board and committee level.

Alvin Jahns and his partner Holger Peterson, own Stony Plain Records based out of Edmonton, Alberta. Mr. Jahns is a chartered accountant that also serves on the Board of Directors of the Alberta Recording Industry Association. Alvin has been actively involved with FACTOR over the past decade through serving on its National Advisory Board.

“I am saddened to see the departure of Sylvia and Brian. They have both been extraordinary members of the FACTOR Board and their contributions have truly helped to shape FACTOR into the organization that it is,” stated Jim West, FACTOR’s Chair. He went on to say that “I am, however, well aware of how capable Terry and Alvin are and I know that they are going to make significant contributions to FACTOR as it continues to grow and evolve.”
