Send + Receive Celebrates Nine Years

Posted on

Venues across Winnipeg are preparing to vibrate, bleep, and crackle with the return of Send + Receive: A Festival of Sound. Celebrating its ninth year, the festival runs May 8 - 13 and promises a compelling week of dynamic sound-based media arts programming. This year's festival will feature an international array of artists from across Canada and beyond. The festival also highlights the incredible depth of talent here in at home.

Manitoba has a reputation for being a hotbed of talent in the electronic and experimental scene. This year's festival features acts like This Camera is Red, Christine Kirouac, and Crys Cole. As well, there are collaborations between Montrealer Freida Abtan and the local Hearstings quaret, and Martin Tétreault with local percussionist Christian Dugas.

The specific content of each festival focuses on current and newly emerging areas of investigation in a variety of forms including live performance, radio, web-based projects, internet streaming, sound poetry, installations, film and video screenings, workshops, and panel discussions. This year also focuses on the relationship between Winnipeg and Montreal, featuring several artists from Montreal.

The year, Send + Receive welcomes back ex-pat founding artistic director Steve Bates for a special performance. In addition to his work as a sound artist, Bates is also known for his work as Greg MacPherson's guitarist and for his time as the programming director for CKUW 95.9 FM.
