Jazz Festival Gears Up

It's officially summer and in Manitoba, summer equals festivals. With the Winnipeg Folk Festival on the horizon, another music fest is getting ready to take over downtown Winnipeg.

The 2007 COOL Jazz Winnipeg Festival kicks off on June 22 and runs until July 2, bringing with it some of the top names in the jazz genre. Names like Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, Pink Martini, and Madeleine Peyroux are just a hint at this year's schedule.

Genre defiers like hip-hopper Cadence Weapon, avante garde instrumentalists The Hylozoists, DJ Champion, and afrobeat band Antibalas will take part in Jazz Fest's exciting New Groove Series at the Pyramid Cabaret.

There are plenty of Manitoba acts taking part in the festivities. Madrigaia, Jodie Borle, Ego Spank, SwingSoniq, Papa Mambo, and All of your Friends head up the Manitoba contigent, joined by JFK & The Conspirators, Vikrama, The Break Bread Crew, Larry Roy, Mira Black, Gills Fournier, Rosemarie Todaschuk, Martha Brooks, Steve Kirby, Greg Lowe, Walle Larsson, Michelle Gregoire, and many more. The hometown talent ranges from blues to alt.country to standards to hip-hop to ska to salsa.
