Call * Response: New Book Celebrates Winnipeg Music Scene

Posted on

The long and impressive history of Winnipeg’s live music scene has been fodder for articles in international magazines, celebrated at national events, and displayed in museum exhibits. This weekend, music fans have a new book that offers a gorgeous, visual history of the vibrant punk scene over the years.

Call * Response: Past, Present and Beyond ~ Volume One features 64 pages of photographs by 36 local photographers (including cover photographer Joey Senft), visual artists, lyricists writers, fans, and more. The LP-size hardcover includes unpublished photos of Dead Kennedys, SNFU, hometown heroes Propagandhi and Comeback Kid, and more. Flip through the pages and you’re sure to find some familiar faces in familiar places, like legendary venue Royal Albert Arms, as well as writings from Albert artistic director Sam Smith and singer/songwriter Greg MacPherson, and poster art by Steve Hallick

The book will be unleashed at a series of events on February 5 with bands and musicians from Winnipeg’s past and present. It all kicks off at an acoustic afternoon show at Into the Music with Greg Rekus, Ivan Reimer, and High Class Low Lives. The West End Cultural Centre will host an all ages show later that night with The Ripperz, The Undecided, The Rock Band, and a reunion of The Bonaduces. The Royal Albert’s stage welcomes Comeback Kid, Rogue Nation, Still Fighting, and Bro-Mags.

The events and the book itself are all in support of the Kids Help Phone. At least $10 from the sale of each $40 book goes to support the cause, Canada’s only phone and online counseling service for youth.

If you can’t get to the book launch events, you can order the book through the website www.callresponsebook.com.  In February, Call * Response will be for sale exclusively at Into The Music. An event in March at McNally Robinson Booksellers will be announced soon.
