Marie-Claude

Nominated for Children's Album of the Year for Mon coffret à surprises

Kid-at-heart Marie-Claude McDonald (aka Francophone chanteuse Marie-Claude) will vie for Children’s Album of the Year for her debut effort as a family entertainer, Mon coffret à surprise, which also picked up a Western Canadian Music Award nod in 2013 for Children’s Recording of the Year. One-time member of vocal ensemble Madrigaïa, whose lineup included members of JUNOAward-winning groups The Duhks and Chic Gamine, Marie-Claude took some time off from performing after the group dismantled. During the hiatus, Marie-Claude taught music in schools and gave birth to her two daughters, Mélita and Mercédès, forging a newfound love for kid-friendly tunes. The singer/songwriter considers her latest project, first and foremost, a gift to her little girls.

Kittens or Puppies?
Kittens for sure.

Most embarrassing moment on stage?
I was hiding behind a curtain while playing hide-and-seek (yes on stage) and one of the kids that found me, while lifting up the curtain, conveniently lifted my skirt at the same time.

Was there a concert that changed your life and how?
Peter Gabriel, Secret World Live – although I only saw it on VHS (not live), it inspired me in so many ways. Robert Lepage as director, Paula Cole's fabulous voice, great songwriting and epic performances. Such a fantastic concert.

Favourite Old Dutch flavour?
I prefer cheezies!

What were your thoughts when you found out that you were nominated for a JUNO?
I was very excited to hear about the Juno nomination… I did not expect to receive the nomination, given that it is a French language CD in a category usually predominantly represented by the majority language. It's a big honour to represent the Francophones as a born and raised ‘Franco-Manitobaine.’
