CURLING FOR A CAUSE: Music Community's Sixth Annual Charity Bonspiel to Support the Kevin Walters Memorial Fund

Posted on

Manitoba’s music community is getting ready rock the house for charity.

Manitoba Music and Manitoba Film & Music will join forces once again for the Manitoba Music Rocks Charity Bonspiel, which will take place at the Granite Curling Club on February 27, 2016.

The sixth annual event, which sells out quickly every year, will bring the province's vibrant music community together to raise funds and awareness for the Kevin Walters Memorial Fund -- a charity that honours Walters' memory through financial support for promising performers and organizations in music, film, performance and the creative arts. Walters, who passed away in 2014, had very close ties with Manitoba Music, Manitoba Film & Music, and the larger the music industry.

Registration for the 2016 Manitoba Music Rocks Charity Bonspiel is now open and people of all skill levels are welcome to join in the fun and curl for a cause. In addition to curling, there will be activities to keep people busy off the ice, and curlers will have a delicious finish to the event’s festivities with a celebratory dinner, with prizes for bonspiel winners as well as those who come dressed in their best, most outrageous, or vintage curling outfits, best team name, and more.

Over 140 curlers rocked last year's event, raising over $4,400 for the Fund.

“It’s an honour to be able to do our part to help the Kevin Walters Memorial Fund achieve its goals. To do it at such a fun event surrounded by the talented and generous members of our music community is particularly fitting. Uniting the community is exactly what Kevin was about," said Manitoba Music's executive director, Sean McManus.

"This event gets better and better each year," said Stephen Carroll, music programs manager at Manitoba Film & Music. "There is so much amazing spirit and energy in this community and the bonspiel is a fantastic display of that. It's become a hallmark music event in Manitoba."
