Manitoba Music and the Canada Council for the Arts are partnering to produce a second edition of the Market Builder Residency for Indigenous Artists and Industry (Market Builder). The project will provide up to 11 export-ready artists and mid-career industry professionals (managers, agents, publicists, publishers, or label representatives) from across Canada with a week of networking and development opportunities in Toronto.

The residency will run February 27 - March 4, 2017 and each day will consist of meetings with creative mentors or industry professionals and networking events. We’ll also host roundtable discussions with local label representatives, music publishers, presenters, managers, agents, and media on the first, third and last day of the project. Please note that all roundtable discussion will occur in English.

Participants will be consulted on the selection of all guest speakers for the roundtable discussions. Each participant will be required to identify the artistic mentors and/or industry professionals that they want to work with or meet in the application but changes can be made closer to the start date if any desired mentors are unavailable.

Roundtrip economy fights (if needed), accommodations, ground transportation, and some meals will be provided for participants.

It is free to apply. A registration fee of $100 ($50 for members of music industry associations) will be required from all artists and industry who are invited to participate.

Artists considered for this opportunity must:

  • Be of First Nation, Métis, or Inuit ancestry
  • Be a solo artist or the band member responsible for the majority of business operations and networking
  • Have a history of at least 14 paid performances each year that stretches back a minimum of two years (i.e. November 1, 2014 to November 1, 2016) or songwriting credit on 10 songs that were released by other artists in the same period
  • Have attended at least one music industry conference outside of their home city or community in the past three years (i.e. November 1, 2013 to November 1, 2016)
  • Have a professional website that features high resolution promotional photographs, quality video content, booking information, and links to social media profiles
  • Have profiles for your music on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter
  • Be registered with SOCAN
  • Have a valid Canadian passport
  • Be 18 years of age or older

Industry professionals considered for this opportunity must:

  • Be of First Nation, Métis, or Inuit ancestry
  • Have a signed contract that identifies you as the manager, agent, publicist, publisher, or label for at least one music artist (self-managed artists and radio hosts do not qualify)
  • Be dedicated to building a career in the music industry as demonstrated by conference attendance, music industry association membership, and business-related accomplishments.
  • Have a business registered
  • Have a valid Canadian passport
  • Be 18 years of age or older

Artist submissions will be evaluated based on:

  • Music
  • Goals (i.e. what do you plan to accomplish in Toronto)
  • Website quality and social media profile
  • Performance history or songwriting credits

Industry professional submission will be evaluated based on:

  • Goals (i.e. what do you plan to accomplish in Toronto)
  • Dedication to building a career in the music industry as demonstrated by conference attendance, music industry association membership, and experience 

Submissions will be rejected if incomplete.
