Since 2009, The Uniter has compiled a list of five local musical acts to watch in the forthcoming year.

For the fifth year in a row, The Uniter is taking it a step further, providing new local acts a chance at some coverage, recording opportunities, a showcase, and introductions to industry contacts, with music fans doing the voting.

The winner will be chosen by online votes at Uniter.ca. Voting is open until 12 noon on Thursday, February 8.

The top five acts (selected by an industry panel) will all receive prize packages and other perks, including a one year membership to Manitoba Music, a chance to record at UMFM, and a spot on the showcase – headlined by the winner – at The Good Will on February 15. They'll all be profiled in the February 15 issue of The Uniter, and the winner will be featured on the cover.

The winner will also get the chance to record a three-song EP at Collector Studio.

The showcasing artists are jazz-influenced indie rockers Giant Skellies; rhythmic psych rock outfit Dizzy Mystics; singer-songwriter and self-proclaimed sad song enthusiast Taylor Janzen; folk-roots duo Two Crows for Comfort; and power pop punk trio of brothers The 1221.

Go to Uniter.ca to vote before 12pm on Thursday, and check out event details for the February 15 showcase in our free MB Live app and online listings.
