If Alicia Keys and Glenn Danzig came to the Doors by way of Nirvana the result would be Split Crooked from Winnipeg, Manitoba. With instantly catchy hooks courtesy of beautifully melded male and female vocals, powerful drumming from a full drum kit and a Djembe, memorable, driving bass lines and fiery lead guitar Split Crooked is leaping into the Canadian Alternative Rock market with passion and positivity.
Split Crooked’s debut album Sense of Now, released January 28, 2012, is a showcase in independence. Remaining self-contained for writing, arranging, performing, recording, producing, and compiling the 9 tracks on Sense of Now, the songs were honed onstage prior to being recorded. Split Crooked’s energetic live show, often featuring inventive extended jams earned the band free studio time from supernova.com where they were #1 on the alternative rock charts for five weeks in the summer of 2011.
Vocalist/Guitarist Randy Sonnichsen, formerly of Winnipeg band Sir Noble began putting together Split Crooked after teaching himself a straightforward guitar style to compliment his song-writing and to realize his ambitions of reaching people with his honest and direct lyrics. The 3-Wheeler team of Bassist Jared Wheeler, Vocalist Marie Wheeler, and Drummer/Producer Chris Wheeler come from a diverse musical background: Jared is the former bass player of thrash/punk costumed maniacs Igor and the Skindiggers, Marie was a featured dancer and actress in the music video for “Nachana ve Nachana” by Bollywood Hip Hop star ishQ Bector, and Chris is the sole owner/operator of CruHouse Studio in Winnipeg. From Winnipeg-based Indie band the Blatant Liars two more slots were filled in Split Crooked: Dominic Desroches on the Djembe, an African hand-drum, and Brad Lee on lead guitar. Dom has shared his passion for rhythm, teaching hand drumming workshops to schoolchildren at the Manitoba School for the Deaf and Brad completes this powerful line-up by bringing to the stage years of experience and musical influences that cover a wide spectrum; from the subtleties of soul to today’s rock n’ roll.
Split Crooked is an honest, hard-working, exciting collective, constantly evolving to new heights of creativity.
