About

The Nu Sounds series is presented annually with support from the Manitoba Arts Council and allows jazz artists in Winnipeg to show new work that's riskier and more daring than the work they may usually perform. "We're trying some new things, showcasing some new artists, and expanding the scope of the program," says Artistic Director Michael Falk. "There's some exciting collaborations, and creative musical storytelling from our diverse jazz community."

The 2017/18 Nu Sounds series will feature work like Kelly Bado's new Pop Goes The World project and Red Moon Road's electronica-inspired side project Blinker Phase tribute. This year's program has a distinctly global flavour: two of Manitoba's migrant communities come together for a modern jazz twist on traditional songs from Chile and Russion Mennonites with Jaime Carrasco and Jesse Kraus' Ensemble. The Bridge Program: From Syria to North America brings together a Canadian saxophonist, a Syrian keyboardist, and a group of students from around the world come together to bring you a blend of sound from Syria and North America. This definitively diverse group of musicians unite  to celebrate compassion, love, peace and what it means to be human. Shows run October to February at The Park Theatre.
