This Icelandic-Canadian duo is a collaboration between percussionist Victoria (Olafson) Sparks and clarinetist Cathy (Christianson) Wood. (Our mothers are Icelandic, so those are the family names on our maternal sides) The unusual combination of clarinet and marimba/percussion and the limited repertoire for this instrumentation sparked a series of commissions for duo Viðarneisti (Icelandic for “wood spark”). The inaugural project and resulting piece by Fjóla Evans commissioned with the support of the Canada Council. Since then, this group has performed as part of the Nuna (Now) Icelandic Arts Convergence, the Millenium Library Concert Series, as well as several individual chamber music recitals. This summer, the duo will be featured guest artists at the 2018 International Clarinet Association conference in Ostend, Belgium. As part of this performance they will be giving a world premier performance of a new work by Kenley Kristofferson.  Viðarneisti’s repertoire and performance has been made possible through the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the University of Manitoba, and Brandon University.
