About

Spotlight on our King's Head Pub Club Series! Kilusan, Boogey The Beat + DJ Hunnicutt get the fest started at The King's Head Pub on June 15 with The Pre-Funk.

Maribeth Manalaysay Tabanera aka Kilusan is a Tagalog Visayan filipinx queer non-binary multi-hyphenate educator, artist and community organizer on Treaty No. 1 Territory. They are a full-time public school educator, artist facilitator with Graffiti Art Programming and Unity Charity and a board member of Manitoba Music, Seven Oaks Filipino Employees Association, and Kultivation Festival. Kilusan has DJed with Queer People of Colour Winnipeg, Synonym Art Consultation, DJ Bles-sed (Montreal), DJ Maseo at Bastid’s BBQ 2019, Naughty By Nature, and Skratch Bastid (Toronto).

For years Anishinaabe DJ and producer Les Boulanger — known by audiences as Boogey the Beat — has toiled behind the scenes, laying the sonic foundations for other musicians’ anthems. As a longtime lover of hip-hop and rap, collaboration is his comfort zone. He’s worked with the likes of The Halluci Nation (formerly a Tribe Called Red) and Snotty Nose Rez Kids, playing stages across Turtle Island. Boogey builds each song around a percussive heartbeat, then adds vocals and other instruments, letting the drum lead the way. He remembers walking up to one of his first childhood pow wows and hearing the big drum, a guiding force that stays with him today.

2021 marked 30 years of Tyler Sneesby, a.k.a. DJ Hunnicutt, making and performing music. He has recorded on dozens of albums, including most of the releases from Peanuts & Corn Records—the acclaimed independent hip-hop label he cofounded in 1994—as well as on records by Rheostatics and, most recently, Rusty Robot. Hunnicutt has played clubs as far away as New York City, Oslo, Bogotá and Berlin, and has shared the stage with the likes of Biz Markie, James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
