About
If you Google the most asked question about Sibelius’ Concerto for Violin & Orchestra, the first thing that comes up is, “Why is Sibelius’ Violin Concerto so good?” The answer is simple. It showcases both the orchestra and the violin at its very best. The melodies are sublime. It is powerful and tender. It is also extremely difficult for a violinist to play. All this makes it an absolute treat to hear. WSO audiences fell head over heels for Canadian violinist Blake Pouliot when he made his debut with the orchestra in 2021. It will come as no surprise when it happens again after performing this epic work.
The evening ends with a symphony that wins the title of “most mysterious.” Also known as the “forbidden” symphony, Edvard Grieg himself wrote that his Symphony in C minor “must never be performed” right on the score. It’s still not clear why. An extremely confident work, this symphony is filled with positive, youthful energy and fresh musical ideas.
