About
The Rady JCC, in collaboration with the West End Cultural Centre, will present the Ethiopian-Israeli jazz artist Gili Yalo with his quintet on Saturday, October 21st at the West End Cultural Centre at 8:00pm
The Gili Yalo Quintet is led by Ethiopian-Israeli musician Gili Yalo. He is one of the most intriguing musicians in the music scene in Israel, combining Ethiopian roots with soul, funk, psychedelic, and jazz music. The result is an exceptional, rich, vivid melody accompanied by Yalo’s unique voice with lyrics in English, Amharic, and Hebrew. The music made by Yalo embodies his own personal story, which inspires the rhythm and flow of the whole project. And what a story he has to tell.
Yalo and his family were saved through Operation Moses during the 1984 Ethiopian famine. Ethiopian Jews fled from their native land on foot to refugee camps in Sudan. Together with his family, Gili Yalo made this perilous journey, through the course of this exhausting and emotional journey, it was music that encouraged Yalo and his family to keep moving. An entrancing rhythmic motion is apparent when listening to Gili Yalo’s music. His music gives a new meaning to traditional Ethiopian music. The expression of his story represents his own personal triumph.
Tickets for the Gili Yalo Quintet are $20.00 for members of the Rady JCC and $25.00 for non-members and are available online now. The Rady JCC Tarbut: Festival of Jewish Culture takes place Saturday, October 21st through Sunday, October 29th. For a full listing of events, please visit radyjcc.com/tarbut.
