About

Folk/Roots. harmonies, multi-instrumentalists

Bio: Known for their soulful three-part harmonies, WCMA Winners Sweet Alibi, have shared their folk roots-pop infused music with admirers across North America and Europe since 2009. They are the distinct and complementary voices of Jess Rae Ayre, Amber Nielsen and Michelle Anderson. Vocalist and guitarist Jess Rae Ayre is often compared to the likes of Adele, Norah Jones and Amy Winehouse, while also presenting her own distinct tone and personality. Amber Nielsen’s vocals and songwriting bring a sincere and pure sound to the group with a Fleetwood Mac-esque edge. Michelle Anderson’s charismatic guitar lines are thoughtfully placed within the songs and the audience is often marvelled by her casual persona that brings a creative flair to their sound. Backed by some of Winnipeg’s finest you end up with the unmistakable sound that has left audiences across Canada, the U.S and Europe adoring this Winnipeg group.

Their latest album, ‘Walking In The Dark’, produced by Murray Pulver (Doc Walker, Crash Test Dummies) has been featured on CBC, MTV Canada, CMT, satellite and college/community radio, touching on heavy subjects of love, death and addiction. “Bodacious”, has a vibe similar to something from Arcade Fire’s Reflektor album, while the song, My Love, lays down a rhythm oddly reminiscent of k-os’ 2006 hit, “Sunday Morning”. These songs, along with the opening track “Keep Showing You”, lay the foundation for Ayre’s sultry vocal style, Amber’s vocals, more traditional and pure. The way she sings on “Not A Fight” is honey to the soul, and her vocals work well with Walking in the Dark’s more pop-oriented tracks such as Moving To The Country, which is a songwriting marvel. It is pure T-Swift-meets-the Supremes” - The Manitoban.

The band is currently working on their fourth studio album with producers Matt Peters and Matt Schellenberg of Royal Canoe. The album is set to be a melodic experience focused on hooky guitar lines and layered beats, inspired by the likes of Alabama Shakes and Bahamas. Sweet Alibi’s sound has been evolving and refining through their past album releases, extensive Canada wide and international touring, as well as a focused effort to draw on the creative efforts of their favourite influencers.
