The Mandate of the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra is to be an instrumental force in the promotion and development of big band jazz in Canada, through performance, composition and education.
Formed in 1997 the WJO has featured many of the finest jazz writers and performers in the world, including Rufus Reid, Bob Brookmeyer, Butch Miles, Bobby Shew, Curtis Fuller, John Riley and many others. The WJO has also commissioned and recorded dozens of works for big band, including Suite 150: A Big Band Portrait (2018), and Twisting Ways (featuring David Braid+Philippe Cote: to be released May 10, 2021).
