About

This year continues to be challenging. As we approach another Canada Day where we can’t gather and share our province’s talent on the stages at The Forks, we will once again offer a virtual online show.

We love being able to showcase the rich and diverse talent found in our province and strive to acknowledge the history of our site and its origins.
Dr. Niigaan Sinclair, our Indigenous Curator at The Forks, offered some thoughts for us as we put together our virtual show this year. He will be sharing a longer version of this at the beginning of our 30 minute show, followed by a moment of silence to honour the children lost and now found.

“But this year is more than just different. What’s also important to talk about are recent events in Canada that continue to bring to light the violence perpetrated against Indigenous communities. These stories are hard to hear and talk about – especially for Indigenous people, who experienced it first hand – but it’s important for Canadians to know that this has been their experience of this country.

Canada has been, and continues to be, a place where important, powerful, and remarkable events have occurred but it’s also a place that exploited and caused pain to many. This is why it’s important to not shy away from these conversations of where we have come from for it tells us the truth of who we are as a community.

During these times of sharing our truths – our hard truths – we learn the most from one another and this is what Canada Day should be all about.

During the past few weeks, as our community has always done, we have come to together to commemorate and honour the children lost at residential schools in Kamloops, Brandon, and many other sites. Many of these commemorations have happened in our sharing spaces at The Forks, as Indigenous peoples did in Nestawaya for centuries.”

We thank Niigaan for offering his wisdom to us.

Join us online on both Facebook and YouTube on July 1 for a free 30-minute virtual program featuring some of Manitoba’s best performers:

Sage Percussion and Emily Solstice
Fortune Block
Plé Collective (Theatre Piece)
Rainbow Tornadoes with Sandi Bay
Mattmac with Boogey The Beat
Bîstyek
The 12/21 (O Canada to Fireworks)

Elders Barb and Clarence Nepinak will provide a blessing. Hosts Debbie Patterson and Ryan Guy Richard will kick off the show and we’ll end it with a virtual fireworks display.

Preceding the event, Dr. Niigaan James Sinclair, Indigenous Curator of The Forks, will share a few words and hold a moment of silence to honour the students who died at residential school sites across Canada. Please join us in a collective commitment to build a better future for all children.

There will be no in-person show or fireworks at The Forks on Canada Day.
