Most Basic Help: an art for AIDS fundraiser

Stephen Lewis once said, The situation of people living and dying with AIDS in parts of Africa is so desperate that even the most basic help will bring solace and hope.

In response to this idea, a small group of people is putting on Most Basic Help, a benefit concert and art auction to raise money for the Hillcrest Society for Aids. Musicians and artists will be taking over the Park Theatre (698 Osborne St.) on November 29, 2006 to offer up their creative energy towards this important cause.

The Hillcrest Society for Aids, located in Hillcrest, South Africa, is dedicated to showing unconditional love in a practical way to all infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. It was started in 1991, with an initial focus on education and counselling. In the last few years, its focus on care has increased rapidly in a response to the needs of the pandemic, which is now full blown. Most significantly is the growth in both the home-based care project and the income generation project, which are seen as the most fundamental part of care.

The evening promises great entertainment, with folk-rocker Cara Luft, acoustic-pop dreamweavers The Land, and others sharing the musical stage. Local artists are donating original visual and edible art to be auctioned during the evening.

It all happens on Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at The Park Theatre and Movie Cafe, 698 Osborne St. Doors open at 6:30 PM, show starts at 7:30. Tickets are $15 tickets, and can be reserved by calling 779-8594 or emailing theresa.meinders@gmail.com.
