SPIRIT MAGAZINE'S ANNUAL MUSIC ISSUE

SPIRIT Magazines annual music issue hit stands this week. As in previous years, a number of artist profiles are included in the issue along with a compilation CD featuring songs by Indigenous artists from across North America. Coverage of the scene in Manitoba includes a one-page profile of Jesse Green, a track by Billy Joe Green on the compilation CD and a submission by Aboriginal Music Program Coordinator Alan Greyeyes.

The Jesse Green spread gives the X-Status front man props for the groups run through the southwestern United States on the Iron Indians Tour this past April; Billy Joes Muskrat Blues fits nicely into the Roots and Rights theme of the companion compilation CD; and, Greyeyes short editorial highlights some of the main points that the AMP Coordinator drew from music industry workshops he attended over the past year.

AMP Camp alumnus, Veronica Johnny receives the most profile, gracing the magazines cover, receiving praise in a four-page article and contributing a track to the compilation CD from her Toronto-based band, The Johnnys.

When asked why SPIRIT Magazine puts together a music issue and compilation CD each year, publisher Harmony Rice explains, somebodys gotta do it.

This years disc includes 21 songs by Derek Miller, Kinnie Starr, Sandy Scofield, Jason Burnstick, Sarah Decarlo and Angela Hovak Johnston to name a few of the artists. The compilation is in its third year now and includes six more songs than the first two years.

SPIRIT Magazine is described as Canadas national Indigenous arts, culture and identity magazine. Copies of the publication are available at Chapters-Indigo Bookstores across Canada.
