Manitoba Artists Nominated for Indies

Canadian Music Week kicks off with the third annual Canadian Independent Music Awards February 26 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto. Four of the eleven Manitoba artists attending the four-day event have been nominated for awards. Violin virtuoso James Ehnes, internationally-acclaimed children’s entertainer Fred Penner, six-member female vocal group Madrigaia and country band Doc Walker are representing Manitoba at this year’s awards.

“It's great to be recognized for the quality of the work that we do,” says Madrigaia’s Marie-Claude McDonald, whose album Viva Voce is nominated for World Album of the Year. “We've been working really hard to get where we are. Getting nominated for something is definitely reassuring - it tells us we're doing something right! We hope that it will attract attention to who we are and what we do.”

It’s been a good week for Penner, Ehnes and Doc Walker, who have recently received Juno nominations for Children’s Album of the Year, Classical Album of the Year (solo or chamber and large ensemble or soloists(s)), and Country Recording of the Year, respectively. This is Madrigaia’s first nomination.

The Canadian Independent Music Awards, or "The Indies," are presented by 102.1 FM The Edge and sponsored by Corus Radio; the Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Records (FACTOR); Galaxie - The Continuous Music Network; Indie Pool Canada; Labatt; and Linus Entertainment, The Indies are comprised of 16 categories. Nominees and winners are decided on by committees made-up of individuals from all areas of the Canadian music scene.

This year, The Indies will be hosted by The Edge’s Dave Bookman and The Rheostatics’ Dave Bidini and includes a live performance by The Rheostatics.
