Three Indie Awards Come Home

Posted on

Three Manitoba acts are returning to the keystone province with awards after a successful night in Toronto on March 3. The Waking Eyes, The Wailin' Jennys, and ex-pat Randy Bachman took home trophies from the Canadian Independent Music Awards, known simply as "The Indies."

Eight bands were nominated for the 5th annual awards, including country stars Doc Walker, violinist James Ehnes, rock outfit Tin Foil Phoenix, now-defunct metal band Malefaction, and roots quartet Nathan. Nathan was nominated with The Wailin' Jennsy for Favourite Folk/Roots Group, a battle the two bands will revisit at the 2005 JUNO Awards in April. Ehnes and The Waking Eyes will also have a chance to bring home trophies from the JUNO Awards, for which they are both nominated.

Bachman took home the statue for Favourite Jazz Artist/Group, proving the diverse talents of the former Guess Who and BTO rocker. The Waking Eyes were named Favourite Group while The Jennys took home the award for Favourite Folk/Roots Artist/Group.
