Local Composer Goes On Strike

Composer/producer Danny Schur's credits include Chantal Kreviazuk, The Pan Am Games theme song and popular musical The Bridge. He was named Producer of the Year at the 2004 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards and has double platinum certifications to his credit. He's one of the busiest composers in Manitoba, maintaining his status as an in-house producer at Platinum/Gold Studios.

And now Danny Schur is going on strike. Strike! The Musical, that is.

Based on the infamous 1919 Winnipeg General Strike, the ambitious historical musical premiers May 26 at the Theatre in the Park in Kildonan Park. With music and lyrics by Schur and book by Schur and Rick Chafe, Strike will run for 21 public shows, as well as three special school/seniors shows.

The production features Broadway starlet, Winnipeg's own Catherine Wreford, as well as star Jay Brazeau. It also features a cast and crew made up entirely of Winnipeggers.

A crowd of approximately 2000 people caught a glimpse of the production in May 2004 when a condensed version of Strike! was staged at Old Market Square to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the General Strike, which is considered to be one of the most important events in Winnipeg and Canadian history.

Now audiences can pile in to witness the full two hours of musical theatre about an event in local history, a rare treat for those who are especially tired of the same old musicals.
