Manitoba Acts Shake Up Toronto

Eight Manitoba acts will head east this week as Canada’s largest music conference and festival takes over Toronto. North by Northeast (NXNE), which runs June 12-15, features an industry conference and popular showcase performances by over 500 artists in 40 different downtown venues.

Showcasing this year at NXNE are Juno Award-winning roots quartet The Wailin’ Jennys, pop punk act Moments of Brilliance, indie rocker Sean Brown, rock ‘n roll revivalists Sons of York, ghettotech outfit Tigerrr Beat, hip-hop act Grand Analog, and singer/songwriters Serena Postel and Katie Murphy. Glen Willows of Burning Circus Management and Rosanna Schick of RAS Creative will be accompanying Sons of York and Serena Postel, respectively.

The Wailin’ Jennys were invited to play at the live broadcast of Bob Harris’ show for BBC Radio 2 at Lee’s Palace on June 12. Harris, a legendary radio host, hopes to convey the excitement of the Canadian music scene to the British audience. This will be a successful wrap up to The Jennys’ recent tour in the UK and the Netherlands.

Moments of Brilliance won their NXNE showcase in the competitive Search for RA NRG contest recently held at the Pyramid Cabaret.

MARIA and MANITOBA FILM & MUSIC will host the 14th annual Manitoba BBQ on June 13 atop the Drake Hotel. The BBQ provides Manitobans at NXNE with the opportunity to network with some of the biggest names in the industry. This exclusive, invite-only party is one of the hottest events of the conference.

As industry events such as NXNE are vital in the advancement of local musicians’ and industry professionals’ careers, MANITOBA FILM & SOUND and MARIA provide financial support from the jointly-administered Market Access Program.
