Over 100 nominations, more than 30 awards, 65+ showcases, plenty of lucrative song placements, and a lot of trips to Europe made 2008 a great year for Manitoba music. Take a look at some of the great stories from the past year…

JANUARY

The year started off with a nod… Twilight Hotel landed a Folk Alliance Music and Business Award nomination for Emerging Artist, handed out in February during this year's Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis, Tennessee. Read more… 

Nine local industry professionals and one artist went overseas for the 42nd edition of MIDEM in Cannes, France, the world’s biggest music business conference, including: Aboriginal production company Rising Sun Productions’ Vince Fontaine, Aboriginal label Arbor Records’ founder Brandon Friesen, Ukrainian folk label Olesia Records’ owner Alexis Kochan, Cafesonique.com’s Ron Lamoureux, and electronic record label Balanced Records’ co-founder, Adam Hannibal. This year Balanced Records artist Solidaze collaborated with French label Spice and Ice to showcase his work. Read more…

Lisa Bell’s song "Time to Fly" was up for the Canadian Radio Star in Toronto.

FEBRUARY

Christine Fellows' latest release, Nevertheless, got four stars in Josh Modell's review in the February issue of Spin magazine. You can now check out Spin's February issue digitally, including Fellows' review. Fellows was also busy this year composing the music for Struck for Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers’s artistic director Brent Lott which ran March 6-8 in Winnipeg.

Songwriter/producer Phil Deschambault and singer Ash Koley had two of their songs, "Mary the Inventor" and "Devil's Dance Floor," featured in the independent feature film The Hottie & the Nottie starring Paris Hilton. In addition to the songs in The Hottie & the Nottie, Deschambault also had his original composition, "You Should Be Gone," featured in the major motion picture The Year Of Getting To Know Us starring Lucy Liu and Jimmy Fallon, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Four local songwriters were finalists at this year's International Songwriting Competition, including: Nathan singer/songwriter Keri Latimer, Scott Nolan, Natasha Kaminsky, and rock outfit 20 Pound Shovel. Read more…

Five hometown acts were nominated for the 2008 JUNO Awards. Nathan and its third release, Key Principles, was up for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year (Group) against duo Compadres, which features fellow Manitoban James Keelaghan. Singer/songwriter Little Hawk got a nod for Aboriginal Recording of the Year while Amanda Falk went up for Contemporary Christian/Gospel Album of the Year. Keith Macpherson sang on Here We Are (songs from This Is Daniel Cook) which was nominated for Outstanding Childrens Album of The Year. As well, Winnipeg-based Aboriginal music label Arbor Records snagged nominations for two of its artists for Aboriginal Recording of the Year: Derek Miller and Sandy Scofield. Read more…

Two Manitoba acts had music featured in NBC drama, Lipstick Jungle. In the February 21 broadcast, singer/songwriter Jaylene Johnson's song "Boomerang" was featured during a dinner scene. Rock/pop quartet The Details and their song "A National Anthem" could be heard in the February 28 episode. Read more…

Four Manitoba acts headed to Memphis, Tennessee to showcase for the folk and roots music industry at the North American Folk Alliance Conference (NAFA), including Twilight Hotel, Dust Poets, Sierra Noble, and Cara Luft. In addition to the conference, Twilight hotel performed at the third annual Folk Alliance Awards. Read more…

The Wailin’ Jennys were featured on Uncut magazine’s Tribute to Neil Young compilation Like A Hurricane. The band’s song “Old Man” -- from Juno-winning album 40 Days -- was in great company with other artists including The Flaming Lips, kd lang, Paul Weller, Cowboy Junkies, and The Be Good Tanyas. “Old Man” was also recently added to the Starbucks in-store playlists in the U.S. The band continued its busy touring schedule throughout the year with stops in the U.S., the U.K., Ireland, and Netherlands.

Singer/songwriter Alana Levandoski is currently in the studio in her rural hometown of Kelwood, Manitoba with U.K. producer Ken Nelson working on the follow-up to her acclaimed debut, Unsettled Down. Three-time Grammy Award winner Nelson is best known for his work with Gomez and Coldplay, as well as Badly Drawn Boy, Echo & The Bunnymen, Kings Of Convenience, and Snow Patrol. Levandoski also headed to Liverpool, England for more sessions at the world-class Parr Street Studios. Read more…

MARCH

This year’s Canadian Music Week, one of Canada's biggest music festivals and conferences, hosted five Manitoba bands: The Details, The Nods, Grand Analog, Inward Eye, and Andrew Neville & The Poor Choices. In addition to the music fest, CMW featured a variety of awards shows including the 8th annual Independent Music Awards, The Indies, which five hometown acts were up for. This year's nominees included The Weakerthans, Doc Walker, Comeback Kid, Grand Analog, and world music duo Compadres. Live On Arrival also got a nod from the Canadian Radio Music Awards. Paquin Entertertainment got one and Dauphin radio man Bruce Leperre of CKDM got two nods from the Canadian Music Industry Awards, as did several other Winnipeg radio stations. Read more...

Six Manitoba acts made Texas home for a few days in March during the prestigious South By Southwest (SXSW). This year’s list of local showcasing acts included The Weakerthans, The Details, Grand Analog, Christine Fellows, The Perpetrators, and Lindsay Jane. For the tenth year, MARIA and MANITOBA FILM & SOUND joined forces with North By Northeast to present the hottest party at SXSW at the Caswell House - a gorgeous mansion in Austin, where industry and artists gathered to eat barbecue, play music, and schmooze. In addition to the festivities at SXSW, The Nods showcased at RedGorilla Music Fest Austin for at the same time. Read more…

APRIL

Nathan picked up the Juno for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year at the private Juno Gala Dinner and Awards in Calgary for its latest release on Nettwerk, Key Principles. This was the third time in four years that a Manitoba act has brought the roots award home. This year’s JunoFest, a two-night festival of music that takes place before the Juno Awards, featured showcases by Keith and Renee, Cara Luft, and Little Hawk. Read more…

Rock quintet The Nods landed a network licensing agreement with MTV shows including Life of Ryan, The Hills and The Real Life series as well as a new series from the newly launched cable network M Cable TV. Read more… 

Two local bands went to Los Angeles to perform for some the music industry’s most influential players at MUSEXPO 2008. The Nods were chosen by MUSEXPO to join this year’s line-up, which includes some of the hottest buzz bands from the U.S., Europe, Asia, and beyond. For the second year, MARIA and MANITOBA FILM & SOUND presented a special luncheon on for all the conference delegates, this year featuring an acoustic performance by acclaimed roots duo Twilight Hotel. The Manitoba hospitality continued with a special networking dinner with Alicen Catron Schneider, VP of Music Supervision and NBC Universal Television Music. The Manitobans making the trip this year included Sara Stasiuk and Danielle Strueby of MARIA, Carole Vivier and Barbara Sedun of MANITOBA FILM & SOUND, Chris Burke-Gaffney and Jewls Dengl of CBG Artist Development, Brandon Friesen of 441 Studios, Jack Shapira of Unison Studios, artist Kelly Fairchild, and David Kennedy of Manitoba Trade and Investment. MAY

Internationally acclaimed rock group Eagle & Hawk announced an upcoming collaboration with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) at the first ever Indigenous Festival on April 29 and 30, 2009 at the Burton Cummings Theatre. Eagle & Hawk will play a 70 minute set with new scores being arranged from the Eagle & Hawk discography. Read more…

Three local acts were in for NewMusicWest, including: Sons of York, Kayla Luky, and Flo. Sometimes-Winnipegger Grand Analog also showcased. Burning Circus Management's Glen Willows also took the trip. Read more…

Twilight Hotel’s Highway Prayer was licensed to European label Corazong Records, which released the album UK in May.

Keith and Renee landed a major song placement that will see their song “Good Year” on television. AT&T will use the upbeat track, which appears on the band’s latest release Revolution, in a 30-second spot that will air on networks across America. Read more…

Producer/musician Mike Petkau launched the Record of the Week Club, a weekly improvised recording session brings together musicians from diverse backgrounds, hosted by Petkau at MCM Studios. The Tracks were made available for download immediately following the session, putting music fans in closer contact with the moment of creation than ever before. A strong emphasis was being put on pairing musicians with people they wouldn't regularly find themselves making music with, encouraging greater communication within the music community. The project, funded by the Manitoba Arts Council, put out a total of 16 tracks. Guests included: The Weakerthans' John K. Samson, Nathan's Keri Latimer, Rusty Matyas and Matt Peters of The Waking Eyes, Inuit throat singer Nikki Komaksiutiksak, and many (many) more. JUNE

Eight Manitoba acts traveled to Toronto for North by Northeast (NXNE), including The Wailin’ Jennys, Moments of Brilliance, Sean Brown, Sons of York, Tigerrr Beat, Grand Analog, Serena Postel and Katie Murphy. Glen Willows of Burning Circus Management and Rosanna Schick of RAS Creative accompanied Sons of York and Serena Postel, respectively. The Wailin’ Jennys were invited to play at the live broadcast of Bob Harris’ show for BBC Radio 2 at Lee’s Palace on June 12. MARIA and MANITOBA FILM & MUSIC hosted the 14th annual Manitoba BBQ, one of the hottest events of the conference. Read more...

Several Manitobans joined names like Broken Social Scene, Yo La Tango, Tegan and Sara, and Mogwai for the popular Sled Island Festival in Calgary. Taking the stage the year were Boats, The Details, The Paperbacks, Absent Sound, ex-pat vitaminsforyou, and a performative installation consisting of four short films and sound called Wildflowers of Manitoba.

The Polaris Music Prize released its 2008 Long List, comprising the top 40 Canadian albums for the year. This year the 180 member jury -- including national music journalists, broadcasters and bloggers -- put two Manitoba acts on that list: Christine Fellows and The Weakerthans. Read more… 

Two Manitoba voices can be heard in Canadian Idol's Top 24: Katelyn Dawn and Lisa Bell.

Katelyn Dawn’s song "Socially Awkward" won first prize on www.songwriteruniverse.com (her song "When the Coffee's Cold" also received the second place prize for May).

JULY

Tele landed on the CMJ's Top ADDS Chart at #20, an unusual result for self-released albums. The electo-pop outfit spent the summer working on new music, launching a shiny new website, and releasing its first music video for "Notice," made by award-winning filmmaker Deco Dawson.

Twilight Hotel headed across the pond to perform at the massive Canada Day London celebration in Trafalgar Square on July 1 in the U.K.

The Weakerthans made it to the 10-album shortlist for the Polaris Prize. Read more...

Country Music Week Honoury Chair Doc Walker solidified its place as one of Canada’s top country music recording acts this year. The country rock outfit and its latest release on Open Road Recordings, Beautiful Life, went up for an impressive six artistic awards and six industry awards at this year’s Canadian Country Music Awards (CCMA). Manitoba artists and industry professionals were up for an unprecedented 19 awards. Industry nominees nominees include Paquin Entertainment, Kelly Berehulka (Casinos of Winnipeg), Dauphin’s Countryfest, and Bruce Leperre (CKDM). Read more…

Roadrunner Records signed melodic metal band Port Amoral. The band was signed by longtime Roadrunner A&R man Monte Conner, founder of landmark metal bands like Sepultura, Slipknot, Machine Head, Fear Factory, and Trivium. Conner's interest was initially sparked after hearing demos produced by John Paul Peters (Comeback Kid, The Waking Eyes) and taking in the energetic live show that Port Amoral has come to be known for. Port Amoral is managed by Trinity Management Group and were set to record their debut Roadrunner album this fall with Colin Richardson

Glam-rocker Kelly Fairchild returned to Los Angeles to perform as part of the Original CrueFest 2008 at the world famous Whisky A Go-Go in Hollywood. Fairchild was one of only 10 artists chosen to perform at the seventh annual Cruefest Hollywood. After performing the opening set for last year’s Cruefest Hollywood, Fairchild was asked to return as a headliner for this year. He also performed as part of the 11th annual Los Angeles International Pop Overthrow Festival at The Knitting Factory, and at an independent showcase at The Cat Club.

AUGUST

Moments of Brilliance won a coveted spot to play on the Ernie Ball stage through the annual Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands contest. They were chosen from over 12,000 bands all over North America to play at various Warped Tour venues. They will performed in Saskatoon, sharing the stage with fellow Winnipeg band, Smallman act Sick City.

Keith and Renee traveled to Kenya alongside folks from Free The Children to learn more about the Adopt a Village program. They participate in building a school and met local families who have been affected by severe poverty in the region. The band shot video footage and gathering stories to share on their 45-date Generation Change Tour of high schools across North America. Read more… 

LeBeato, the new electronic act from the minds of Moses Mayes, made its West Coast debut at the Shambhala Music Festival. Located just outside Nelson, BC, Shambhala is Canada's premier DJ and dance festival, featuring the industry's biggest names for four days of amazing music from the genre. They were joined by expat (or current Winnipegger, depending on who you talk to) The Gumshoe Strut.

Aboriginal artists from Manitoba demonstrated the strength of the regional scene, nabbing 30 nominations in 20 categories of the third annual Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards (APCMA). Manitoba artists also picked up six nods for this year's Indian Summer Music Awards (ISMA) and another six nods at the Native American Music Awards (NAMMYs). Juno-winning rock act Eagle & Hawk lead this year’s APCMA nominees with five nods. Double nominees included Don Amero, J.C. Campbell, Tracy Bone, Da Skelpa Squad, and Darren Lavallee. Other Manitoba nominees included Whitehorse, Sioux Nation, Slidin’ Clyde Roulette Band, Team Rezofficial, Leanne Goose, JJ Lavallee, Walking Wolf, Little Hawk, Sierra Noble, Fresh I.E., Lil' Disciples, Wab Kinew, Ryan D’Aoust, and Métis Hour Times Two. Arbor Record’s rap ensemble Team Rezofficial hit the top of MuchMusic’s Rap City Urban Video Chart. The video for their single "Lonely" entered at number six and continued a steady climb upwards, reaching the number one slot on August 25. The video, directed by Toronto-based MuchMusic Video Award winner Lux, was added in medium rotation in early July. The single is featured on the band's second full-length release, The World And Everything in It. Additional chart action for Team Rezofficial includes: #16 on the Top 20 Hip Hop Monthly Chart for July 2008, #8 on the Top 10 Hip Hop Weekly Chart as of August 5, #2 on the Top 10 CJSR Edmonton Weekly Chart and #10 on the Top 10 CIUT Toronto Weekly Chart. Smallman Records act Comeback Kid did a cross-Canada tour in support of live CD/DVD, Through the Noise, joined by Bane, Misery Signals, Shai Hulud, Outbreak, and Grave Maker. The DVD featured the retrospective documentary "Our Distance," which uses intimate on- and off-stage as well as in-studio footage. Alongside the doc, the DVD features a 2007 live performance of Comeback Kid playing in Leipzig, Germany. A 17 track audio CD of "Live at Leipzig" is also included in the package.

SEPTEMBER

The Weakerthans were up for one Canada's most prestigious national songwriting prizes: The ECHO Songwriting Prize. The award-winning act's song "Night Windows," off its latest Epitaph release, Reunion Tour, stood against songs from Veda Hille, Wintersleep, Sandro Perri, and Socalled. Read more…

Doc Walker swept the 2008 awards in front of an ecstatic crowd at the MTS Centre, winning five major awards and 10 trophies in total. The Portage la Prairie band was named Group of the Year and picked up the Fans’ Choice Award. Their fifth release, Beautiful Life, won for Album of the Year, while the title track won for Single of the Year and Video of the Year. Paquin Entertainment was also named Agency of the Year. The Western Canadian Music Awards (WCMA) are coming back to Manitoba in 2009. The Western Canadian Music Alliance, which produces the annual event, named the City of Brandon as its 2009 host. The seventh annual WCMAs will take place next fall. Read more... 

The Duhks stopped in at the imeem offices in San Francisco to record a special pair of videos. These "Acoustic Sessions" were featured exclusively on the imeem website.

OCTOBER

Inward Eye once again landed on stage with The Who. The trio of brothers joined the legendary act on its 2008 American tour in October including stops in Boston, Detroit, Philadelphia, and Washington DC. Read more… 

Manitoba artists and music industry companies headed across the pond to do business at Popkomm. This year, Manitoba had its strongest presence yet with a delegation that included some of the province’s leading industry professionals: Brandon Friesen of 441 Studios and Arbor Records, Adam Hannibal of Balanced Records, Vince Fontaine of Rising Sun Productions, Ron Lamoureux and Dorina Morelli of cafesonique.com and Roxie Music Group, and Manitoba Music's Sara Stasiuk. Female-fronted rock outfit Domenica and Balanced’s expat electronic act DJ Brace showcased at the Popkomm Festival, which featured more than 400 solo artists, bands and DJs in over 25 official locations in Berlin. Manitoba music was all over Edmonton at the 2008 Western Canadian Music Awards, landing eight awards at this year’s festivities. Local artists accounted for 28 nominations in 20 different artistic and industry categories, including 19 artistic nods. This year’s big winner was indie rock outfit The Weakerthans, which brought home hardware for Outstanding Independent Album and Songwriters of the Year for its latest Epitaph/Anti- release, Reunion Tour, and Video of the Year for “Civil Twilight.” Other winners included The Liptonians, Tracy Bone, Twilight Hotel, Steve Bell, and Paquin Entertainment. The awards gala was the pinnacle event of the sixth annual Western Canadian Music Week - held October 16 to 19, 2008 in Edmonton - which also featured an industry conference and three-day music festival, which featured showcases by Twilight Hotel, Tracy Bone, The Liptonians, The Perpetrators, Cara Luft, J.P. Hoe, House of Doc, Deuxième Take, Keith and Renee, Quinzy, The Telepathic Butterflies, Boats, and Tele. Read more…

Roots act Jacob and Lily landed the general round finalist spot the Folk Alliance-presented 2008 Mountain Stage NewSong Contest. As a result, the duo was also selected to perform on the broadcast of West Virginia's popular Mountain Stage radio show, which reaches a wide American audience.

The Ontario Council of Folk Festivals hosted a strong line-up of Manitoba acts at its 22nd annual conference in Ottawa. Manitoba Music hosted its annual "Manitoba at OCFF" showcase featuring seven of this year’s hometown artists. This year’s performers included Ann Walton, Serena Postel, Kerri Woelke, Matt Epp, Michael Peters, Don Amero, Mr Mark, and Dust Poets. Read more…

The Duhks went full speed ahead with their 2008 Fast Paced World Tour, promoting their latest effort on Sugar Hill Records. They played a string of sold out shows in the Northeast, and then made their way down to Nashville, TN where they were asked to participate in a showcase as well as a special Green Panel on Sustainability for the Americana Music Conference. CLIF / GreenNotes (the makers of the CLIF bar) took notice of The Duhks focus on sustainability (greenduhks.com) and is now collaborating with the band to promote eco-friendly touring practices. GreenNotes is a powerful collaboration focused on environmental action whose family of musicians already includes Ben Kweller, Josh Ritter, Missy Higgins, and more.

NOVEMBER

Eagle & Hawk was also the big winner at this year’s Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards in Winnipeg, picking up four awards including Aboriginal Entertainer of the Year, Best Group or Duo, Best Songwriter, and Best Rock CD for its album, Red Road Stories. Other winners included J.C Campbell, Darren Lavallee, Little Hawk, and producer Brandon Friesen. Manitobans took home a total of eight statues at the third annual APCMAs, which were handed out at a nationally-televised gala at the MTS Centre on November 7 and at a celebration on November 6 at McPhillips Street Station. Novillero followed up successful showcases at Pop Montreal and CMJ with a 16-date tour of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Fresh from the release of its latest effort on Mint Records, A Little Tradition, the band opened for German indie rock sensation, Tomte.

Jodi King has spent much of November in Liberia, Africa with Lifewater Canada. While there, she sanf with a group of orphaned children and recorded her song "I Live for You" with them. Lifewater is a volunteer-driven organization that trains and equips the rural poor in Africa to drill wells and build washrooms.

Manitoba artists picked up some hardware at this year’s Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards which took place at Toronto’s Rogers Centre on November 28. Rock outfit Eagle & Hawk won for Best Group or Duo and Best Rock Album for its album, Sirensong, while country legend Ray St. Germain won for Best Aboriginal Music Radio Program Promoting Aboriginal Music for his NCI FM show, The Métis Hour. November was a busy month for indie rock outfit The Waking Eyes. After releasing the highly anticipated Holding On To Whatever It Is on Coalition/Warner, the band landed on the cover of Chart Magazine, hit MTV Live in Toronto, and stopped by TORO Magazine to play an acoustic version of "All Empires Fall," which can be caught online in TORO's Garage Band.

DECEMBER

Singer/songwriter Cat Jahnke is in the process of composing for Canadian short film Fermata while two of her albums, None of Those Things and O Night Divine, were picked up for distribution through Conveyor/Universal. Europe’s Positive Gaming licensed two of her songs for use in their revolutionary iDance video game system, which is currently being marketed commercially throughout Europe and North America to health clubs and spas (a home version will be released internationally in early 2009). As well, Jahnke’s “Happy Song” was licensed for an episode of CTV hit television series Degrassi: The Next Generation set to air in early 2009.

Keith and Renee also landed a major music placement for their song “Good Year” on Degrassi: The Next Generation. The duo was also named an “On the Verge Band” by New York’s Relix Magazine.

Mike Petkau co-wrote the score to Cattle Call, a short film Matthew Rankin and Mike Maryniuk of l’Atelier national du Manitoba, with D.Rangers front man Jaxon Haldane. Petkau also did sound design. The film was accepted to the famous Sundance Film Festival after a September screening at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
