The Artist Next Door Celebrates Second Season on TV

Rik Leaf is coming to a community near you and he's bringing cameras. The singer/songwriter/musician is also the producer and host  of The Artist Next Door, a television show that aims to celebrate the unique characteristics of Winnipeg neighbourhoods.

Next week, Leaf will be in Wolseley doing a live taping for MTS TV Winnipeg On Demand, which broadcasts the show. Wolseley residents are invited to attend the taping, which will feature world percussionist Scott Senior with Brazilian guitarist Marco Castillo, singer/songwriter/fiddler Sierra Noble, Taiko Drum Performer Phoebe Man, visual artist Diana Thorneycroft, and poet Jan Guenther Braun.

Now in its second season, the series was born out of producers Leaf and Derek Eidse's experience with the North End Artist Collective. “We live in an area of the city with lots of artists but no art galleries or live music venues, so a group of North End artists and residents have been organizing house concerts in neighbourhoods around the area for almost three years. The events have been so successful we just thought we’d expand the idea to discover the talented, passionate artists that live in other neighbourhoods around Winnipeg," explains Leaf in a recent release.

The series taped is feature on Osborne Village on May 24 with the likes of Cara Luft, Jessee Havey, Hugh McMillian, JD Edwards, dancer Jolene Bailie, and visual artists Sheldon Dawson and Sandy Glass from Medea Gallery. After its stay in Wolseley, the series will move on to West Broadway.

“The Artist Next Door is about the unexpected; around every corner awaits a performance or person who will move you. As well each show is framed by conversation and community that represent the best of our city,” says Cam Bennett, Executive Producer of Winnipeg on Demand.

The Wolseley taping is taking place at 7:30 pm on June 7 at the Neighbourhood Cafe. The event will be filmed outdoors on the patio. Adminission is free but space is limited.
