Winnipeg Cultural Capital of Canada 2010 - Staff Announced for 18 Months of Special Events

Carol Phillips, Executive Director of the Winnipeg Arts Council and Executive Producer of Winnipeg Cultural Capital of Canada 2010, has today announced two appointments that will guide the production and presentation of this year of extraordinary cultural events in Winnipeg.

Dominic Lloyd leaves his current position as Artistic Director at the West End Cultural Centre, to take on the Project Manager role for Cultural Capital 2010. He brings his extensive experience in putting together special events and festivals, strong financial management skills and excellent knowledge of the local arts community, to the operations and logistics management of the year. Dom says, " It was Winnipeg's reputation as an arts capital that brought me here in 2004, and I view this opportunity as a way to help boost that reputation even more to our own citizens and to people across Canada and around the world." Dom officially begins his new duties December 7, 2009.

Alix Sobler, freelance writer and communications consultant, Winnipeg playwright and theatre professional, will take on the task of Marketing and Communications Coordinator. Formerly Manager of Public Relations and Communications for the Winnipeg Humane Society, Alix brings direct communications experience along with a deep involvement in Winnipeg's arts community. "I have been greatly supported by the artists and cultural institutions here. I am excited to have the opportunity to give back, and to promote Winnipeg as the Cultural Capital of Canada." Alix begins November 16, 2009.

WINNIPEG CULTURAL CAPITAL OF CANADA 2010  The Cultural Capitals of Canada is a national program funded by the federal government through Canadian Heritage, to recognize and support Canadian municipalities for special activities that harness the many benefits of arts and culture in community life. Winnipeg, will receive up to $2 million from the program, as a contribution to eighteen months of extraordinary cultural events and arts programming, the total budget of which is more than three million dollars, with contribution from the City of Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Foundation, and public and private sector funders. Events are designed to intersect with the entire population of Winnipeg, from a free River Barge Festival at the Forks, a story-telling project in every neighbourhood, the first Canadian International Cello Festival, to a massive multi-site exhibition of contemporary indigenous art from around the world, and much more.
