Winnipeg's Only Urban/Hip-hop Radio Station Hits the Airwaves

Winnipeg's only urban/hip-hop radio station, STREETZ 104.7 FM, has officially hit the airwaves. Debuting on December 14, the station is set to target Winnipeg’s Aboriginal youth demographic, which makes up the majority of Winnipeg's Aboriginal population, estimated at 80,000-90,000 people. Its presence on the radio will go a long way to helping Winnipeg's urban and hip-hop scenes flourish. The station has made a huge commitment to supporting the scene; Aboriginal hip-hop/urban music will make up 40% of STREETZ' content.

The station's playlists have been offering up something a little different, spinning more underground hip-hop than top 40. The roster of DJs, with ages ranging from 19 to 28, are all hooked into the urban music community. Afternoon Boom host Sadie, for example, is an up-and-coming 19-year-old emcee who released her debut critically-acclaimed EP, Boomboxx Sounds, earlier this year. Listeners will hear a wide range of music from popular Aboriginal hip-hop acts including Wab Kinew, Team Rezofficial, and Da Skelpa Squad, as well as other Manitoba urban acts like The Lytics and Grand Analog.

"My first impression of STREETZ is very positive," says Kinew, who recently picked up the Best Rap/Hip-Hop CD at the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards for his album, Live By the Drum. "I'm really excited about the fact that I as a hip-hop artist will have a new outlet to reach fans. The thing that I'm really stoked about though is that people from all backgrounds will be tuning in  because they love hip-hop and will be exposed to programming put together by young Natives."

"We are confident that STREETZ 104.7 will become a popular radio station in Winnipeg," says STREETZ CEO David McLeod in a recent media release. "Our research with youth between the ages of 18-35 provided us with a strong foundation in our planning. In terms of the sound, listeners will hear announcers from our target demographic, STREETZ 104.7 will truly reflect its audience. Winnipeg’s future population is increasingly becoming diverse. STREETZ 104.7 will become a part of that diversity."
