Aboriginal recording acts from Manitoba had a strong showing this week at two American music awards. Two acts picked up hardware at the 2010 Indian Summer Music Awards (ISMAs) while three acts landed six nominations for Native American Music Awards (NAMMYs).
The ISMAs, which exist to promote and honour the best of Native American Indian music, were handed out at a gala celebration on September 11 during the Indian Summer Festival in Milkwaukee, WI. Country rocker Kimberley Dawn came away victorious, earning the Rock Category ISMA for her new CD, Built That Way. Juno-winning rock outfit Eagle & Hawk won in the Contemporary & Modern Instrumental category with its latest release, The Great Unknown.
Eagle & Hawk has been quite successful at the ISMAs – the band’s previous album, Sirensong, won top honours in the Alternative Rock and Classic Rock categories in 2009, and the group is a regular on the Indian Summer Festival stages each year.
Eagle & Hawk has also received three NAMMY nods for The Great Unknown, including Best Rock Recording, Songwriter of the Year, and Song/Single of the Year for “What If We Could.” Recent Canadian Folk Music Award-winning artist, Don Amero, contributed to the multi-artist Colour of My Life album, which is up for Best Compilation Recording. Rock newcomers Segweh’s self-titled debut has earned the band nominations for Debut Duo or Group of the Year and Best Rock Recording. The NAMMYs will take place in Niagara Falls, New York on November 12, 2010.
