Bringing it back home: The Back 40 Folk Festival Gears Up for a Day of Homegrown Music

Posted on

Festival season is underway and there are gems to be found beyond the perimeter. Musicians from the city and the country are heading south to Morden for the Back 40 Folk Festival, which takes place from noon until dusk on June 5.

With a mission to elevate homemade music, this year’s festival includes award-winning songwriter and Nathan front-woman, Keri Latimer; acclaimed songwriter Cara Luft will give a taste of her upcoming new album; blues jam band Link and the Moustaches are back this year and audiences will get to stomp their boots with Woody Holler and His Orchestra who share their love of western-swing with a touch of yodeling. Other artists on the bill include: 3molplaut, Broken Branches, and Jayme Giesbrecht.

“Tweener” sets will boast the budding talent of young southern Manitobans Rachel Ashley, Ravae McDonald, and Steve Wiebe. Each will perform a short set during the afternoon. In addition to the music, families can take part in crafts and games in the activity tent, Captain Bubbles returns with all sorts of bubble making tools for the kids, and local visual artists will showcase and sell their works as well.

The Back 40 Folk Festival kept busy earlier this spring with a Songwriter’s Workshop and Coffeehouse in March hosted by Del Barber and the annual fundraiser, “That '60s Show”, in April where bands were invited to dress the part and pay tribute to artists such as Janis Joplin, Captain Beefheart, Bob Dylan, and B.B. King.
