Folk Meets Art in Brandon

Posted on

After a brief repose from the flurry of folk activity at Winnipeg Folk Festival, local bands pack up and play again, this time at the small but mighty Brandon Folk and Art Festival! Celebrating its 28th year this weekend from July 20 – 22 at the Keystone Centre Park, complete with camping, local hand-made art, poetry workshops, and visual art installations, the real big draw is the mainstage.

The official festival kick-off takes place July 19 at The Great Western Roadhouse and features Toronto-based love-hop singer/songwriter Kinnie Star, Winnipeg’s Mama Cutsworth, indie duo The Young Pixels, and JUNO Award-winning alt.roots quartet  Nathan.

During the weekend, the mainstage at the park is packed with talent from near and far. Ambient folkster Demetra, alternative indie act Federal Lights, along with The Young Pixels and Nathan, help open the festival with guests Geoff Berner and Great Lake Swimmers, as well as headliners Jane Siberry and Judy Collins. Also on the bill this weekend are Brandon’s four-piece folk band Sebastian Owl, Winnipeg-based drumming group Fubuki Daiko, and touring roots trio Crooked Brothers.

Other Manitoba acts include Kurtis Gibson, Rob Waddell, Dustin Harder, and workshop appearances by Don Amero and Marie-Josee Dandeneau
