Random Questions with Dave the Intern

Posted on

We're pleased to welcome our new intern, Dave Henry, to the Manitoba Music office. Dave, who recently moved here from Toronto (not some tropical paradise, as his picture might imply), will be in the office a few days a week working on various projects, including music industry research. Stop by the resource centre to introduce yourself. Meanwhile, we asked him some random questions...

Q: Where are you from and what were you doing while you were there?
A: I grew up just north of Toronto in a small town and eventually moved to "The Big Smoke". My last job before I moved to Winnipeg was working for an adventure travel company. It was a lot of fun and I got to travel a bit while I worked there. My favorite place I went was Peru. They eat guinea pig there, and yeah, you better believe I tried some.

Q: How did you get started in music?
A: I studied Music Business Management at Durham College in Oshawa. From there I moved on to intern with Dine Alone Records/Bedlam Music Management. I was also involved in a variety of roles with various festivals and conferences such as Edgefest, Virgin Music Fest, Canadian Music Week, and NXNE.

Q: What music are you listening to lately?
A: I haven’t been able to stop listening to the Vacationer album Gone. More recently I’ve been listening to this surf pop/indie rock band called Abadabad and a punk band called Best Practices.

Q: Do you play any instruments?
A: I play the guitar, but I’ve recently acquired a banjo which I’m slowly pluckin’ away at. I also used to play trumpet when I was younger, and I played the washtub bass in a band with some friends when I was in college.

Q: What sound does your cell phone make when it rings?
A: Usually my phone is on vibrate, so it really depends on what surface it’s laying on. My favorite so far is metal surfaces;they make the loudest noise. It’s all like “BzZZZZzZzZZzzzz BzzZZZZzZZZZz”.

Q: How do you find out about new music?
A: I usually discover music from my friends or through bands I already listen to posting about other bands or bringing them on tour. I also love listening to a lot of online radio stations like CBC Radio 3 or playlist websites like 8tracks.

Q: Okay not a question, but make up the best band name ever. Right now.
A: “Siesta Fiesta” Because, who doesn’t love a good nap time party
